The story of Toothpic traces back to 2012, when CEO Mark Moore had a dental issue. “My dad is a dentist, and while working late one night, I was concerned about a gap I’d noticed in my lower gum, so I called him to ask what I should do. Of course, he couldn’t help over the phone but suggested I send him a photo.” Upon doing so, he called straight back with a diagnosis and recommendation and mentioned how the quality of the photo was as good as those taken by professional dental cameras. That’s when Moore realized how much technology could help dentists and consumers, and the original Toothpic was born.

The Toothpic team has been working in the teledentistry space for 5 years, and Toothpic Pro is their newest product, built out of feedback from dentists that they want a teledental solution in their practices, to use with existing patients or to attract new patients. It’s a teledentistry tool that allows patients to securely chat and send high-quality photos of their teeth to their dentist. Dentists and dental practice owners can sign up and get quick access to a teledental tool that requires no new equipment, is easy for patients to use and overall benefit from the possibilities of remote consultations. “The possibilities are endless, and that’s exciting for us.” according to Moore.

“Over the last few years, we have partnered with Philips Sonicare, allowing users of the connected toothbrush to get a remote consultation with a licensed dentist in their state. We have also been working closely with insurers across the country to bring teledentistry to their customers. The dentists have always been the most important piece in this puzzle, so we now decided to give the power of teledentistry to every practice owner in the USA with Toothpic Pro.”

Currently, dental care doesn’t always provide a great customer experience from the patient’s side. It can be seen as expensive, inconvenient, and complicated. Moore notes that the patients often want to know about the estimated cost before going for the treatment. Also, no one wants to visit the dentist again and again. Remote consultations remove a lot of the initial barriers for patients accessing an oral care professional, whether they’re anxious about the unknown costs or issues, they don’t have the time to get to the office, or they don’t know the dentist yet.

To sign a dentist up, the Toothpic team starts with a demo of the product with the dentist, discussing how they can best use Toothpic Pro in their practice. They worked together and set them up with an account to allow them to test the tool on their staff, to ensure everyone in the office understands the technology.

The Toothpic Pro team then creates a unique link to allow patients to connect with the dentists in that specific practice. The dentist can share this link with new and existing patients, and that’s when the magic happens.
